Borderline

Homer is flying in with the map…

About Borderline

How to play Borderline, the daily history map game

Each day there are three mystery places, the same for everyone and easiest first: countries, empires, kingdoms or other states, each at one moment in history. You see the year, and the land shaded on a map of that year, and you have 6 guesses for each. Guess any place from any time: each guess shows how far away the mystery is from it and in which direction, and whether your guess existed in that year, or how many years too early or too late it was. Homer the homing pigeon flies toward the mystery as you get closer.

Are there hints?

Yes. After 2 wrong guesses you learn which of today's countries the land is in, after 3 the map names the other states of that year, and after 4 you get the first letter of its name.

Where do the borders come from?

From Cliopatria, the Seshat Global History Databank's open atlas of the world's states from 3400 BCE to today (CC BY 4.0). Borders long ago are uncertain, and the atlas shows one version of them.
